A Season To Share Blessings!

DeborahFowler-Opt2_2014pic_webDear friends,

The end of the year brings many of us a wealth of blessings: the holidays, family, friends, gifts and celebrations around the dining room table. It also reminds us of the value of home, whether we are “going home” for the holidays or inviting others into our home. So many of my memories of Thanksgiving and Christmas center on the warmth of family gatherings – feeling happy, loved and overfed!

Yet there are far too many Austinites who will not have the same opportunity to celebrate “home” this holiday season. On any given night 2,300 to 4,000 of our neighbors are without a home, including more than 200 families with children.

They include people like Laura, who had been without her disability income for over a year when a case worker at Trinity Center helped her restore her income and get supportive housing. Laura has since reunited with her daughter. And Brenda, who struggles with serious mental health issues and, was living in an unregulated boarding house that took all of her income, until Trinity Center intervened. Now she is in the safety of a nursing home.

Trinity accomplishes its work through the support and resources offered by the community, both in time and tithe. Each year more than 700 volunteers offer nearly 6,000 hours of service, enabling us to provide all the services and meals we offer with a paid staff of only four. The Center also provides important financial assistance, transportation passes and case-work services. Trinity’s case workers helped 46 people find housing last year.

In order to continue to grow, we call upon you for contribution. If you have already given all that you can this year, we THANK YOU for your generosity. If not, or if you wish and are able to support us further, we ask that you include Trinity Center in your Thanksgiving/Year-end contributions.

  • $1,500 can provide 1,400 breakfasts and 300 lunches for a month.
  • $5,000 pays for assistance obtaining 100 birth certificates and 200 Texas picture I.D.’s (1/3 of this budget’s item), critical to obtaining housing and employment.
  • Any amount that you decide to contribute gets us closer to meeting our annual budget.

As you celebrate the joy of home this holiday season, please consider what you can do to bring that sense of safety and warmth into the lives of those who may not be so fortunate.

May your coming year be filled with joy, the safety of home and family, and with thanksgiving for all the blessings we have been given.

In deep gratitude,

Deborah Fowler
